The cuff is a group of four muscles that surround the shoulder helping to stabilise the joint. This is why this movement is painful when you have damaged a rotator cuff.

Exercises aimed at strengthening this group of muscles can have a dramatic effect on performance, but even these exercises would be low weight low resistance exercises.

For the rest of us, it is really just about maintaining the general fitness level of our rotator cuffs. As we age, these muscles become weaker through lack of exercise. Changes in posture can also lead to problems with the tendons leading to tendonitis or shoulder impingements. It is no coincidence that shoulder injuries are more common in the over forties and the incidence increases with age.

Therapy for all shoulder injuries will include exercises for the rotator cuff at some point in the recovery process.

Yoga and Pilates focus on core strength and balance, aiming to align the body properly and develop correct posture. They concentrate on control and flexibility. All the exercises are slow and controlled and are done in a specific order aimed at developing the whole body. Where changes in posture have resulted in rotator cuff problems, these type of exercises can help to correct the posture and solve the problem.

BREATHING:

1. While lying on your back practice breathing to the top part of the chest while keeping your

3. Remember to keep the
abdominal wall

flat
while you breath as it is common to “blow” the abdominal wall up as you breath.

SPEED:
Let your
natural breath guide you as to how fast you should be moving

People usually move too fast and fail to recruit, engage and perform all aspects of the exercise. By slowing down you can have time to think and perform the exercise properly.

Remember to use the inhale when movement is easier or you are at your most stable position and to exhale long and strong as you perform the more difficult actions of an exercise. Of course the exhale is strong and steady while keeping your abdominal wall flat!

POSITIONING:
Different positions challenge muscles differently.

Utilizing
twisting, flexing and

extending movements
will enhance overall mobility and muscular ability.

To increase muscular challenges perform movements unilaterally or one side at a time and force the body to balance and stabilize.

engaging your brain and contracting or squeezing your

muscles
in the absence of resistance.

Think about it- lift your arms out to the side like your an airplane. Now reach your arms out longer and feel how your muscles in the shoulders and down your arms actively engage in the position.

People tell me I should start Yoga if I want that, and people tell me I should start Pilates if I want that… Can you please tell me what the difference is between Yoga and Pilates please? Pilates and Yoga are similar in that they are exercise programs which emphasize toning the body and flexibility. Yoga emphasized toning the entire body and has more emphasis on flexibility than pilates. There are many types of yoga. Each has a different emphasis. Hatha yoga is the most common yoga type. It consists of slow and gentle stretching. Power yoga focuses on going through a series of movements, without stopping. It also can have some aerobic benefits. Birkram yoga focuses on doing yoga in a hot room. This help a person get deeper into poses than otherwise. And these are just three of the many types of yoga available

Pilates focuses on toning the core and improving posture, and some improvement in flexibility. There are both mat and reformer pilates classes. Mat pilates classes are great for beginners, while reformer pilates classes allow one to have much more resistance in the exercises than just your body weight.

If you don’t know which one to pick, try a yogalates class. These classes combine the best of Pilates and Yoga into a single class.

Any of the classes would be fine for a 12 year old.
