When this happens the drug can get into your blood system (called absorption). The more ointment the more drug in your blood. Too much ointment in the blood means too much drug in the blood. Too much drug in blood equates to an overdose. An example of such a drug is nitroglycerine ointment used to prevent angina or chest pain that could lead to a stroke or heart attack. Cosmetics are not made to pass through the skin, and therefore the size of the molecules are greater than 50 microns. However if applied to an open wound, a cosmetic ointment, cream or lotion could get into the blood systemt, this may cause a systemic reaction or an overdose.
