Chinese Healing: Emerging in the West

At one time, Chinese healing and medicine were only well known in their origins. However, today, Chinese alternative treatments and medications are on the rise in the western world. Chinese medicine actually traces back centuries and has been used and developed for hundreds of years. Chinese healing is used by Oriental practitioners for a variety of physical problems. The whole of Chinese medicine includes more than just herbal therapies, it also includes breathing exercises and muscle exercises, dietary therapies, acupuncture and, at times, a combination of these therapies may be used at once.

Most of the Chinese healing treatments are based on the Chinese principal on Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang deal with the harmony and balance of the body and the principals of Chinese medicine work to return the body to its normal harmony. Various treatments used in Chinese medicine are developed on the symptoms being shown by the body that point to a particular imbalance within.

While at one time many doctors in the United States looked down on Chinese medicine, doctors are now recognizing these ancient healing techniques as an effective form of medical treatment. One of the treatments that has been found to be effective for treating a variety of physical problems is acupuncture. Scientists have been studying the effects of acupuncture and studies are showing that the treatment is effective. The entire theory behind Chinese healing and medicine rests on having an internal balance and the medicine strives to correct imbalances through treatments such as acupuncture and through herbal therapies.

As more and more studies are being done on Chinese healing techniques and herbal supplements, the findings are showing that Chinese medicine is indeed effective and safe. Some pharmaceutical companies are actually working with the Chinese to develop newer and safer medications based on Chinese medicines. I went to clinic to check my problem and it could not be determined. But the chinese physician was about to tell me what’s wrong with me just by feeling my pulse.

We who are fans of plant-based medicines, like used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, usually say to take us to a Western Medicine Emergency Room if we are in a car wreck, but let us use our own stuff with long term, chronic diseases. Plant-based medicines, whether from whole plant parts or extracts, usually are slow acting and kind to the body. They may take as long as a year or two to have their final effects.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient study of the body within its environment and the relationships between both the outer world and the body and from within the body in regard to the workings and relationships of the major organs and the channels. Pulse readings, from properly trained practioners, can give much information to aid in diagnosis. Since the TCM aims at restoring the body’s balance between organs, treatment can begin when the imbalances are identified. This is not the same thing as naming a specific isolated disease. In my body, my kidney yin is often low, so I can use Rehmannia Six formula or some variant, to help restore my balance. This is needed whether or not I have a disease. In fact, when properly used, it should help me retain good health and avoid disease.
All life is composed of chemicals. We talk about proteins, lipids, water, DNA, sugar, and these are all chemically described. The interaction of chemistry and electrical impulses can describe our lives.
While some of us say we are more than chemistry, which I believe is true, there is room to use the science of chemistry to help us. Western medical drugs tend to be pure substances of a single chemical type. Plant-based medicines are often complex mixes of chemicals because that is what occurs in living things.
Nothing can be said to completely heal conditions, because eventually we all die. But, along the way, we make choices to keep our health or restore it. I personally favor plant-based TCM.
