…But have also heard many who say they love what it does for them.
I’ve never tried a true Bikram class.
Once my main teacher (Iyengar/Anusara) turned the heat in her studio up to about 85 F – which is still far from the standard Bikram temp of 100 F or more.
I can say the heat did get us sweating very quickly, and it did seem the additional heat promoted deeper muscle relaxation, thus some deeper flexibility.
Many non-Bikram followers take issue with his stance to legally trademark his style, and other issues such as his support for asana contests/competitions.
My perspective: if you are mainly seeking a physical activity, try Bikram and if you enjoy it, more power to you.
However, if you believe part of your interest in yoga is spiritual development (self realization), in the long run, you may be more satisfied with a more authentic style, such as Jois’ Ashtanga Vinyasa, or others that recognize asana practice as a small component within a greater system towards self realization.
