5 Ways to Raise a Drug and Alcohol-free Teen
1. Educate
When kids learn about drugs and the damaging effects they have on our bodies, you are taking the mystery and “excitement” away from drugs. Giving kids newspaper articles and magazine clippings about accidents and deaths associated with drugs allows them to see first hand how bad they can be. Educating them with images is a good way to show them damaging affects. Many teens who are concerned about their own vanity may think twice about rotting teeth, yellow skin and damaged organs.
2. Be Approachable
If your teen asks you a question about drugs or alcohol, don’t change the subject or ignore them. Be approachable and give them the opportunity to feel safe about asking questions they may be shy asking in the first place. If you are more approachable to them, it’s likely you will be able to stop them from sneaking around and trying it for themselves in a destructive way. Don’t lie about drugs or alcohol or pretend that they don’t exist. You will only fuel the fire of curiosity.
3. Get Legal
Tell your teen about the legal issues associated with drugs and alcohol. Sometimes the fear of losing your license, freedom and reputation is scary enough for a teen. Getting caught with drugs and alcohol is bad news. If they want to stay on the soccer team, cheer leading squad or stay in theater they better stay out of trouble.
4. Lead by Example
Now that you have laid down the laws about what not to do- you probably don’t want to do them yourself. If you really feel like tying one on, perhaps it’s best to do that in adult company or on a personal trip. Showing that you are respectable, hard-working adults who are not drug or alcohol addicts will go far in how your kids copy their environments.
5. Reward Good Behavior
Since there is huge pressure to be a model student, reward your teen for staying drug free. Whether it’s movie tickets, help buying a car or those coveted pair of shoes, show your teen that you care that they are making smart choices. There is a ton of temptation out there, let them know how proud you are of them. It’s also a good idea to continue to compliment their efforts on a daily basis, keeping them on the right track.
When you treat them with respect and want the same for yourself, you won’t have to worry about your teens sneaking around trying to experiment with scary drugs. Be real to them and honest and create that open space in your household and it will be that much easier for your teen to ask you the questions they may be afraid to ask. Don’t keep drugs and alcohol this exciting mystery- reveal the truth about drugs and alcohol and raise your teen with drug and alcohol awareness.

Can you give me some tips on how I can stay alcohol free and not to relapse?
I have been alcohol free for over a month. it’s hard. I need any advice or tips.. thanks
Drug and alcohol abusers may start their addictions as self-medication for problems like anxiety and depression, or may develop such problems as a result of the addiction. Treating these conditions may help prevent relapse, but must be done with care, as some antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs are themselves addicting.
Antabuse is meant to be a relapse-prevention drug for alcoholics, and acts by producing unpleasant symptoms such as nausea and vomiting when alcohol is consumed. Its effectiveness is limited because the relapsing alcoholic can either stop taking Antabuse or ignore the symptoms.
Naltrexone and suboxone are two drugs that act not to punish the relapsing addict, but to prevent drugs from taking effect if consumed. The addict who uses alcohol or opiates while on these drugs simply doesn’t experience the same high because the relevant receptors in the brain are blocked. Some addicts report these drugs have helped them achieve successful abstinence.
In the case of some other drugs, notably methamphetamine, there is no medical way to prevent relapse, and the best known treatments involve behavioral therapy and support groups. In any case, such non-medical treatments should accompany any drug used to prevent relapse.
– Going somewhere else, if you are in an environment where others are using.
– Calling a sponsor or other abstinent friend for support.
– Writing a list of people who will be harmed if you use.
– Writing a list of reasons you have to be grateful (for anything) right now.
– Doing a kind deed for someone else.
– Praying.
– Exercising (try 10 push-ups or a brisk walk).
– Deep breathing or meditation.
– Eating or drinking something healthy.
– Taking a nap.
good luck on the tips
Couples therapy can be the best choice for alcohol-dependent women with supportive spouses
Barbara McCrady and Elizabeth Epstein wanted to know whether cognitive behavior therapy worked better for alcohol-dependent women when delivered as couples therapy than when delivered as individual therapy. They reported recently that both treatment methods worked well, but women treated in couples therapy maintained their gains a bit better than those in individual therapy. Also, women …
